I'm alternating between "Grad school is going to be SO AWESOME!" and "Who am I kidding, I'll never get into grad school and if I do I'll starve to death."

Speaking of awesome, and death, Moby Dick was so, so awesome. Although I suppose that rooting for the whale the whole time makes me sort of not the target audience.

I seem to have sold a story to ChiZine. It's about birds. Again. Still.

The MTA seems to have determined that the best way to handle itself is to alternate periods of pretending to not have a care in the world with periods of total ass-on-fire panic about budget shortfalls during which they propose service cuts that miss the point of having a public, mass transit system so hard and long you'd think that someone invoked Rule 34 on point-missing porn*. Personally I have my doubts about this strategy. However, if it eventually causes The Man to give us congestion pricing just to shut them the goddamn hell up, then I will rescind my doubts, because fucking damn, anything that would maybe slow down the total decimation of the entire biosphere even a little and also reduce the number of people who try to make right turns over the top of me on any given day would awesome. Too.

*oh, baby. Quibble about that slick wet irrelevant detail again! Stick your psychological issues into the debate harder! Harder! Harder!**

**Now that I think about it, this makes slash fiction out of virtually every blog comment thread I've read this week.

It was a good day to be wearing green in the NFL.

The Jets won their morning game convincingly, even with Mark Sanchez nursing his knees back in New York City and Kellen Clemens playing abysmally in his stead. Hardly mattered. Gang Green's running game was hitting, and the defense played lights out. Of course, they were in Tampa Bay playing this year's Bucs, so it hardly counted. Josh Freeman, the heralded Bucs rookie QB, looked just awful, but maybe some of that was Rex Ryan's D. Still, these Bucs are so bad they ought to make them go back and wear the creamsicle uniforms until they start playing better.

The Jets are still in the playoff hunt, but just barely. They pretty much have to win out, and with the Colts and the Bengals on their schedule, I think that's unlikely. And next week they have to beat Atlanta, who have a bad record but gave the Saints all they could handle today.

Green Bay won as well. Another "green" team.

And, sadly, this evening the midnight green Iggles of Philadelphia defeated my Giants in a heartbreaker. All the talking heads are saying what a great game it was. Pfui. It was an EXCITING game, yes. The G-Men came out stumbling and spotted the Iggles to a two touchdown lead, then battled back for the rest of the game. Every time they closed the gap to one score the Eagles would get punch in another one and widen it again. Finally the Giants managed to take a one-point lead at 31-30... only to have the Eagles get a long TD on the very first play after the kickoff. The scoring continued after that, and finally ended 45-38 in favor of Philadelphia. The Giants racked up a ridiculous number of passing yards, and both teams left points on the board. McNabb missed one wide-open receiver who was streaking downfield for what should have been a certain touchdown, receiver Mario Manningham of the G-Men had two endzone receptions disallowed for having one foot out of bounds, and his fellow wideout Hakeem Nicks had a couple of TD passes bounce off his hands. There was also a Giants linebacker who dropped what would have been a certain pick-six served up by McNabb. It too bounced off his hands. (And weirdly, it wasn't a pass after all, but a forward fumble, but after our LB dropped it players on both teams just ignored the live ball lying there on the grass). There were fumbles, a punt return for a TD, an freaky pass broken up by an Eagle that caromed off his thigh into the hands of the Giants tight end... lots of crazy, colorful, thrilling stuff. Both teams played hard.

But a great game? Pfui. For fans like me, who appreciate defense, it was far from that. Neither team brought their defense, from what I saw. The Giants certainly proved themselves unable to stop the Eagles. After ranking as the best defense in the NFL at season's start, our D has fallen apart. Especially the pass rush. McNabb had all day back there. Eli played one of the best games I have ever seen him play -- his stats were off the charts, and would have been obscene if Manningham could have stayed in bounds and Nicks could have caught the balls that were bouncing off him -- despite the fact that he was under pressure every snap. McNabb, on the other hand, could have filled out and filed his tax return in the pocket on a couple of those plays. What the hell happened to the Giants' fearsome pass rush? We have the same players as last year and the year before. With added depth; by rights we should be better. But Bill Sheridan, our new defensive coordinator, does not have them playing the same agressive attacking style that Spags did last year, that has made a world of difference. Sheridan needs to go. I want my Big Blue D back. I like winning games 13-10 much more than losing them 45-38.

Oddly, despite the loss, the Giants may still have a better chance of making the playoffs than the Jets do, provided the Cowboys continue their traditional December collapse. But I am not holding my breath. Next week's game against the Redskins has the look of a classic trap game. After getting up emotionally for the big games against Dallas and Phillie, the Giants are all too likely to suffer a bad letdown against the Skins and get upset, which would effectively end their season. I've seen it happen before. And Washinton is better than its record. And even if they get past the Skins, the Vikings are waiting at season's end. The only silver lining in the clouds over the Meadowlands is the fact that the Giants own the tiebreakers over the Cowboys, so if both teams finish with the same record, New York goes to the playoffs and Dallas stays home. But right now Dallas is a game up.

Life is magical... but full of pain.

If you weren’t paying close attention, you might think of “The Way You Make Me Feel” as one of Michael Jackson’s weaker, less interesting music video films.  However, this video has always interested me much more than the song alone. Everything Michael Jackson did as an adult came back to an exploration of himself, of course, as a symbol for many concepts–celebrity, masculinity, gender, race, beauty–and this video is dear to me for all of that.

Beyond Michael’s personal mirror, I see the film and its choreography as a hymn to gender fluidity and a melodramatic reenactment of traditional masculinity as a performance and the chasing/conquest of women by men as performance for other people rather than for the actual pleasure of the man or woman involved in the chase. His seduction is really a show-off to the admiring dudes watching in awe.

This is complicated by his appearance and, for that matter, Tatiana Thumbtzen’s appearance. The song appeared on Bad, which means the year was 1987. The 80s could be called the decade of the Supermodel. Who were the icons of feminine beauty back then? Elle Macpherson, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Linda Evangelista, Christie Brinkley, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford. Compared to the constantly changing almost faceless cast of female fashion models today, those women were icons, superstars, and compared to the bony, starved, androgynous body type preferred by the industry today, those women were buxom, curvy, sensuously fleshy. Compared to those women, the late 80s standard of the feminine, Tatiana Thumbtzen is downright hard, sinewy, broad-shouldered, boyish…in a word, androgynous.

twymmftatiana

Sublimated gender and androgyny are some of Michael Jackson’s most consistently explored topics and this video is a nine and a half minute visual dissertation on them. Michael is the protagonist in the video and is clearly the least traditionally masculine in appearance, surrounded by loud, posturing men, some fat, some big and imposing, some tattooed and sporting unkempt facial hair, swaggering and engaging in ghetto male rituals of playacting violence with one another. The older man advises Michael to stop trying so hard to act like that kind of man, to admit that he doesn’t want to be that kind of man, that kind of person, and to “just be himself.” The group of hoodlums teases Michael, saying he doesn’t know anything about women (implying: he knows nothing about being a man; implying: being a man is being an aggressive hoodlum), and then we get our first close shot of Michael’s face.

And it’s a strikingly delicate, pretty face, with smooth, light, even skin, eyeshadow and eyeliner. A tendril of wavy hair fallen in front of one eye. It’s almost viscerally shocking, how much more “feminine” he looks compared to the group of tough guys we were just watching, how much prettier he is than the girl he’s supposed to be pursuing, how much more delicate and frail he looks than her, strutting by with her wide shoulders and bare, well-formed arms. She passes him and we linger on his face as he takes a deep breath, his chest heaving like a woman in a Victorian novel. Something builds in him. Just past the three minute mark, it escapes in a yell, teeth bared like an animal: “Hey!”

twymmf3

When he turns, he has swapped gender cues again, he’s a man, he’s going to show you that he’s a man, baring his teeth, curling his lip like Elvis, emphasizing his jaw. His pivot is not womanly, it’s stiff and tense, like a gunslinger at dawn after ten paces, deeply reminiscent of scenes from Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon A Time in the West” and other such classics. To reinforce that old Western movie image, we get a quick cut to Michael’s hand as though he might pull out a weapon but it’s just a trick; his fingers explode in the vague shape of a gun. We smile; don’t we?

Only after all this does the song actually start. There’s no need to analyze in depth the choreography that we know so intimately by now, but the one important thing about it in this case is how crudely sexual it is, in diametric opposition to the lyrics he’s singing. Take, for instance, the sequence just before the five minute mark, where he exhorts the woman to “kiss me baby and tell me twice that you’re the one for me.” These lyrics seem sweet and childlike in their simplicity, something the boy next door would say–yet he grimaces through them at the head of a menacing crowd of men, while pantomiming a vigorous grinding with his hands and thrusting hips. The woman, momentarily disgusted, shakes her head and runs away. The action seems designed to obtain this result from nearly any woman, but the actions are not for the woman–they never are. The acts are for the benefit of the men watching, who had fallen into step with Michael and become satisfied that he is a real man.

He pulls away from the crowd to chase her and again the lyrics and dance moves flip, opposing each other. He catches up with her and proceeds to shuffle, hop and point in some cross between Bob Fosse, hiphop and ballet styles of dance, showing off his precise, elegant, dare I say feminine, moves, occasionally thrusting his pelvis to remind us of his cock, while singing that he’ll work all day to buy her things (like a man should, right?). Around 6:15 he breaks into a hip-jutting runway model walk. This sequence is like putting gender in a blender. And in the end, he gets the girl.

No, it’s not his biggest budget number, it doesn’t have the best story or the coolest costumes and graphics. It’s not the technological achievement that “Scream” or “Black or White” was, nor the smash hit that “Thriller” was. But taken in the context of the artists’ life and oeuvre, it is a fascinating music video, that’s for damned sure.

When “Poker Face” first came out, it was “featured” on last.fm so I watched it. I thought it was really well-produced with a great video, but found the music itself totally bland and lacking any personality or redeeming value. Now, I’ve watched Lady Gaga reach impressive heights of adulation and ubiquity in a very short amount of time and accidentally read about her in publications from Rolling Stone to the New Yorker and been subjected to the ill-advised semi-nudity of many imitators in bubble costumes this Halloween. After the continuous unrelenting all-media onslaught of promotion I have broken down and am listening to her entire album. I’m giving it a good try, three or four spins. And damned if it still does not sound like well-produced but essentially soulless, pointless and often melodyless eastern european 80s pop.

gaga
Lady Gaga: The formula seems to be Lite Fetish + Thierry Mugler + Sunglasses - Pants

I do love some of her outfits, I like her videos, I guess her dancing is ok. But it’s not like she designed the outfits, did she? Her fashion is fun but still not as creative or unexpected as Bjork in her heyday. Her videos don’t really go with her songs and I’m sorry to beat a dead horse but the degree to which the dance routine in the “Bad Romance” video rips off and does not pull off the “Thriller” zombie dance is just….. well.

bjork
Bjork: Still awesome over the decades.

So I ask you why? Why is she so popular? Is it just her clothes? Are we so starved for entertainment as a culture that we’ll listen to absolutely anything if it’s forced on us enough? Is it her aesthetic closeness to a cartoon character that makes her easy to understand and mentally digest? Is there something about her actual music that I am missing? I’m bewildered.

A portrait depicting Michael Jackson on horseback, dressed in regal garb and attended by two cherubs, has been sold at auction for $175,000, a US art gallery said.

“Equestrian Portrait of King Philip II,” commissioned by the late pop star, who died on June 25, was sold to a German collector at the Art Basel show, said Kathy Grayson from New York’s Deitch Projects gallery.

The large portrait, which Jackson never saw in its finished form, measures 3.51 (11.5 feet) by 3.1 meters (10.1 feet), and is the work of New York-based artist Kehinde Wiley.

“I was receiving messages saying Michael Jackson wants to reach you,” said Wiley of being commissioned for the work in 2008. “I ignored them because quite honestly I thought it was a prank.”

The end of the year is almost upon us, and the holidays are bearing down like a freight train, so it must be time for a Christmas sale.

From now until the end of the year, I'm offering special discounts on three of the hardcover books offered on the Signed Books page of my website.

The Meisha Merlin trade hardcover of TUF VOYAGING, with a cover by Michael Komarck and interior illustrations by Janet Aulisio, normally sells for $29.

The Bantam Spectra hardcover reissue of WINDHAVEN, my collaboration with Lisa Tuttle, sells for $26 on the website.

And INSIDE STRAIGHT, first volume in Tor's new Wild Cards triad, goes for $27.

You can also get all three of these books for $69.

But those are the normal prices. From now through the end of the year, as a Christmas special, I'm offering each of the hardcovers for $20, or all three for $57.

Those prices include Book Rate (Media Mail) shipping within the United States. If you would prefer Priority Mail, please add $5 for a single book, or $10 for more than one. Overseas and out-of-country shipping is more; please inquire.

And of course I'm always willing to sign and inscribe the books.

((Oh, and while the supply lasts, the copies of INSIDE STRAIGHT I'll be sending out are signed by Daniel Abraham and Melinda Snodgrass as well. But I have less than 20 of those, so once they're gone, it will be just my own autograph)).

Happy holidays, and good reading.

Note from the Assistant's desk:

Please email grrmbooks@gmail.com with questions regarding ordering or international shipping rates.

As always, you can find our ordering page here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/books-ordering.html

Just wanted to share some more of the wonderful Ice & Fire miniatures from Dark Sword.

First, some lovely painted versions of Prince Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, and Ser Gregor Clegane, the Mountain That Rides, dueling for the life of Tyrion Lannister. Tom Meier did the sculpts, and Matt Verzani painted these for the Dark Sword studio collection.

Prince Oberyn:

The Mountain:

The Duel:

Tom is always so exacting about scale and size with his sculpts; I love how this pairing brings home Ser Gregor's monstrous size in such a vivid and visceral way. And of course Matt has done a wonderful job with the paint, as always.

And while Matt's been busy with his brush, Tom has been sculpting up a storm in his studio, and we have some great new greens to add to the range. These aren't in production yet, but look for them soon.

Here's Arya:

And Sansa:

Lady Catelyn:

And a personal favorite, Sansa building her snow castle at the Eyrie:

For more information and pictures, visit the Dark Sword website at http://darkswordminiatures.com/ And remember, miniatures make wonderful stocking stuffers for all the Ice & Fire fans in the family.

And down go the Dallas Cowboys, for a season sweep.

Only a SuperBowl tastes sweeter than a victory over the hated Cowboys. Once again, as in the playoff game at Dallas two years ago, all the talking heads picked Dallas, and once again all the so-called experts were wrong. If anyone had told me yesterday that Tony Romo would complete 41 passes and Eli Manning would complete 11, I would have figured the game for a Dallas blowout... but if anything, the final score should have been more lopsided in favor of the G-Men. The last Cowboys TD was a gimme in garbage time, and earlier in the game our Steve Smith let a sure TD catch go skipping off his hands. The keys to the victory were a pair of amazing plays, a catch-and-run by Brandon Jacobs, and a punt return for a TD by Domenick Hixon. You'll see them on the highlight reels this evening.

Will the G-Men make the playoffs? Well, they have a chance now... but the road ahead still looks pretty damn rough, with the Iggles next week and the Vikings at season's end. But for this one week, at least, life is magical and full of joy.

Pretty amazing week in the NFL all round. Evil Little Bill and his P-men were upset as well, the Saints had a close call and an amazing win (has Dan Snyder fired that kicker yet?), and the Raiders knocked off the Steelers with Bruce Gradkowski doing his best Kenny Stabler imitation. Things are getting really interesting.

And Dallas faces the Chargers next week. Maybe I won't need to kill Pat after all.

(P.S. Flozell Adams is a thug, and may be the dirtiest player in the NFL).

Today I "ran" (very slowly, but I pumped my arms, so it was at least jogging) for a full 30 minutes, and I wasn't too wiped out at the end. I may not be able to do it fast, but I feel like there is a decent chance that I may be able to make it 4 miles next week without walking, if I go slow enough. Hopefully the judges will wait around for me! I am proud of myself though--a month ago I could not have done even this.

I wholeheartedly love and support Add Art (the brilliant Firefox plug-in that replaces web banner ads with random art with about 99% success) but I just have one small suggestion for making it better. I would like easy to navigate access to all past sets of Add Art and the ability to create a profile, save and choose my favorite sets, maybe even uploading my own sets without having to submit them to the larger population. Because the last three or four sets have just completely sucked to the point where I would almost rather see the ads and all I want in the world is to go back to the set where every banner ad was replaced by a picture of this Koons sculpture and just stay with that for the next year or so.

koons

Jeff Koons (American, b. 1955). Michael Jackson and Bubbles, 1988.
Ceramic. 42 x 70 1/2 x 32 1/2 in. (106.7 x 179.1 x 82.5 cm).

I happened to mention Add Art at work in a marketing meeting where we were discussing banner ad campaigns and I was shocked to receive a bunch of confused blank looks. From a room full of marketing people! I had thought a huge percentage of people used some kind of ad blocking plug-in these days. Once again my estimation of the general population betrayed my laughable optimism. (I suppose that’s a good thing as long as my company’s banner ad campaigns continue to perform well.)

Are you running Add Art? Something different but similar? If not, why not? Do you like looking at ads? Do you just not see them anymore or find them easy to ignore?

Would there be this outcry over the treatment of Amanda Knox if she was not a conventionally attractive young white woman? I think not. There certainly isn't a similar outcry over the differences in the quality of "justice" found in US courts, if you're poor/a person of color.

I read today at Daisy's Dead Air that there has never once been a millionaire sentenced to death in US courts. Unsurprising. This quote is SO relevant here:

"Nationally, studies consistently demonstrate that, everything else being equal, a defendant is approximately four times more likely to get the death penalty for killing a white person than for a black person. The racial configuration by far the more likely to result in a death sentence is a black defendant and a white victim."

If I see one more person write in *that voice* just how HORRIBLE and UNFAIR the Italian justice system is compared to ours, I will scream.

The whole thing also reminds me of JonBenet Ramsay. The media outcry around her death was HUGE, and so incredibly hurtful to the families and friends of the hundreds of killed/missing kids of color whose tragedies have never made national news. In Atlanta, GA, from 1979-1981, there was a string of child murders that never made it to national news, and the media silence around the killings was part of what made it easy for them to happen.

There wasn't this kind of emotion, this kind of personal feeling that someone AMERICAN could be treated this way, when Laura Ling and Euna Lee were captured by North Korea, that's for damn sure. In fact, I remember reading plenty of comments to blog posts talking about how they were stupid to have gotten so close to North Korean soil. Comparing comment numbers on Jezebel, the posts about Ling and Lee being released received roughly 1/5 to 1/10 as many comments as have the last couple on Amanda Knox.

It's interesting and enraging and completely predictable.

Life is magical and full of... uh... a tiny teeny bit of hope?

The Jets beat the Bills of Buffalo last night in Toronto, which was good. Defense looked awesome, especially Darrell Revis, who completely shut down that loudmouth TO. Offense, not so much. And things got even worse on the offensive side of the ball when Mark Sanchez dove for a first down and hurt his OTHER knee, the one not already in a brace. Really, he's taking this "following in the footsteps of Joe Namath" thing too far. Kellen Clemens looked awful in relief. If Sanchez is seriously hurt, Gang Green is done.

And if not... well, there's still a slim chance we could make the playoffs. All we'd need to do is sweep our last four games, including the undefeated Colts and red-hot Bengals. That's going to happen, sure. Uh-huh.

But Rex does have the defense playing lights out, so that's something.
