This was asked of me and Anna a couple of weeks ago. We were leaving Governors Island after installing a minigolf hole we made there.
It kind of made me feel like a Rock Star.

I just signed up to take a Toy Design Class at FIT this morning. This should be interesting. I haven't taken a class or been a student since I finished my undergrad in '99. Just the thought of being a student again is kind of exciting. Being forced to learn something new and a new way of thinking, as opposed to just coasting along learning new things as I need them, which isn't that often. Who knows? if I really like this, maybe I'll try to earn a Masters on part-time basis. FIT is supposed to have one of the best Toy Design programs in the country. and it's good to get in with a professor before you apply to a program.
I hope I have an interesting professor, there's nothing like a good professor who challenges you. Makes you think your ideas through and look at them from different angles. of course, there are pretty sucky professors too. So, we'll see.
Another good thing is that

I managed to score a decent time slot on the Main DJ stage from 9-10. However, I wasn't very happy with my set. An hour is waay to short to DJ. It doesn't allow for any kind of vibe than "up, up, up". The DJ setup was upstairs on the balcony, so it was really hard to A)hear what it actually sounded like and B) connect with the crowd. Plus I always get nervous when I'm on the really BIG dance floor. Too much pressure.
So, I get done with my hour and I'm left a little disappointed. One of the reasons I love to spin is to make that connection with people. When they're really grooving to the music that you love and there's smiles and booties shakin'.
Well, at 10 o'clock the music is supposed to shut off on the smaller sound systems outside, however they keep going and around 10:30 I approach my friend Ed who is DJing on one of them and ask him what's going on. He's like "the museum told us to keep going until the Park people tell us to stop. It's great but i'd like to go party at some point". and I'm all like "Well, I'll take over for you when you're ready to quit".
I go on a few tracks later and it happens, The Second Set Syndrome. I'm relaxed, focused and really feeling the people. I'm outside on a Djing off a table my feet are on the same ground everyone is dancing on and the Dancefloor is packed. I can do no wrong musically. The dancers follow my sound as I change up styles a little and bring them to different places. I wish I had some CDs to give people who kept asking me who I was and where could they hear me regularly, what?
Well, we got shut off at 1am by the parks people. I was getting tired and was starting to lose some of that magic, so I was a little happy to stop. Well, this isn't the first time The Second Set Syndrome" has hit, but it is the first time I really recognized it. I hope I haven't jinxed myself now ;)

| You are sociable, outgoing, energetic, and lively. You prefer to be around people much of the time. You are generally calm and composed, reacting moderately well to situations that most people would describe as stressful. A desire for tradition does not prevent you from trying new things. Your thinking is neither simple nor complex. To others you appear to be a well-educated person but not an intellectual. You have some concern with others' needs, and are generally pleasant, sympathetic, and cooperative. You are reasonably reliable, organized, and self-controlled. |

So, I'm done, at least for a week and half. "The Trees" my Burning Man Art project has been cast, cut, sanded, ground, stained, crated and shipped out to Nevada. Yay! Today is the first day in a few months I don't have to do anything.
In fact, I just may not do anything. Except maybe, clean my apartment, fold the laundry, sew some costumes or bake cookies for the downstairs neighbors. I guess that's not nothing, but none of them are requirements, there's no deadline associated with any of those chores.
Today, I'm achy, I feel like I might be getting sick. Actually, I've felt like I been getting sick for a month, but I haven't allowed myself to get sick. Now, I can get sick all I want and it won't put me behind schedule. The thought of being able to let myself get sick actually makes me happy. I don' have to be on top of my game for at least a few days. I do have to make sure we're ready for the desert though. No problem.
So, here's the updated set of "the Trees" the On going Saga.

My New York age is 22
This New York age puts you-generally speaking-into the young category. That's what you were hoping for, right? Run and tell your friends. Then get drunk (as usual). Then sleep it off. Then pop an Adderall. Then come back and consider experimenting with a more mature type of New York life (just once in a while). Have you ever been to the Village Vanguard or the Living Theatre? Eaten at Elaine's? Taken a date to Michael Feinstein? Before you laugh, check 'em out and see what old-school NYC experiences you can add to the new.
What's your New York age? Take the Time Out New York quiz and find out!
I feel kind of honored.

In honor of Burning Man's "Green Man" theme, long-time
super-involved-in-the-community burner Been Jammin' is creating a large-scale sculpture installation called "The Trees," which will be part of this year's Mangrove surrounding the Man. You can see specs of the project and pics of the process here:

Now we just need to get the trees to the Playa. His art grant only covered a fraction of the Container cost, and he still has a long way to go.
Please help send this project to the Playa by buying tickets for a 50/50 raffle: the winner receives 50% of the money raised, and the rest goes towards funding the shipping costs for this project. You can secretly benefit yourself while sending great art to Burning Man, so what's to lose?
Tickets are $5 each, or $20 for 5. The more you buy, the more you can win! Through this alone, you could completely pay for the cost of your airfare, van rental or giant fuzzy lined jacket with grommetedcanteen-holder and custom pill pocket, WHILE SUPPORTING ART!!! Lucky you!
We'll be selling raffle tickets at every Happy Hour from now through August 1, when we'll hold the drawing. Please show your support, and thank you for saving the trees!
if you don't think you'll be making HH anytime soon, you can also purchase raffle tickets online. Please send money through Paypal to beenjamminj@yahoo.com. Include your name, email address and phone number in the "comments" section.
Thanks for your support!
Your Score: Hand-Raiser
You are 57% Rational, 57% Extroverted, 42% Brutal, and 28% Arrogant.

You are the Hand-Raiser, that annoying kid in class who always had an answer for everything. No doubt, as a child you probably sat in the front of the class, anxiously waving your hand back and forth in the air while your teacher desperately tried to avoid calling on you because you were the ONLY fucking kid that answered her questions. Clearly, the key traits of your personality are your rationality and your extroversion. You are like a little talkative calculator, in other words. You also tend to be rather gentle and less arrogant than most people. Your presence is a bane to everyone's existence, because you are too nice for your own good and you absolutely will not shut up. So what is your defect, then? Well, you're boring, and when you're not boring, you are just plain annoying with your ultra-logical responses and constant need to talk to others. So keep waving that hand in the air, son. I'm still not calling on you. You are too logical, you talk too much, and your humility and gentleness only makes me hate you more, because they make me feel like I almost SHOULDN'T hate you. But I do. Big time. And by the way, the more you wave your hand in class--your extended hand becoming nothing more than a blur as you insanely wave it, thinking we can't see it--the more smug satisfaction the teacher takes in watching the look of excrutiating pain cross your face as you agonize over not being called on, and the longer we'll wait to call on you, just because we absolutely love torturing you so.
To put it less negatively:
1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.
2. You are more EXTROVERTED than introverted.
3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.
4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.
Compatibility:
Your exact opposite is the Brute.
Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Braggart, the Haughty Intellectual, and the Robot.
*
*
If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42% Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well. Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored near fifty percent for certain traits.
The other personality types:
The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.
The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.
The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.
The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.
The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.
The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.
The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.
The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.
The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.
The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.
The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.
The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.
The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.
The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.
The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

This past Labor Day weekend. Anna and I went up to Camp D with about 50 other people. It's a small camp out on a farm in the Catskills. I brought my sound system (with new amplifier) for the tunes. There's not much organized at Camp D so peopole bring stuff to do. We had Debarchery(don't ask), Gun shooting(I shot a pistol and shotgun for the first time), propane antics, bonfires, swimming, lobster cooking and of course in true Burning Man Fashion we burn an effigy.
Last year Anna and I did the effigy. It was a lobster(because we always cook lobster on the fire up there) and was great fun to build and burn. It burnt nicely although it wasn't a great piece of art. I had a great sense of accomplishment in making it. Here's a pic of it here:
( Lobster )
Fast forward to this year. I had a lot more time to think about and design the effigy this time. It was determined we would do a Unicorn. Because, Playa Del Fuego the Delaware regional burn has a pony and of course we have to be better than them with our unicorn. I drew it up before I went up there. Anna, Sly and I built it in a couple of hours in the afternoon. I had gotten in touch of someone who had access to to fire works and he wire the thing up to make it pretty.
About an hour before dark we dragged it to the small rock island in the middle of the pond and loaded it up with firewood and gasoline. I decided it would be cool to set off the piece with a roman candle. So, at dark and after waiting for everyone to actually get there to see it. I shot off the roman candle. It took a few tries to hit it, but I did, and nothing happened.. Then I got another firework that just burns and used that, nothing. I tried a flare, but bounced off and went into the water. Finally, we went and got more gas to throw on. That did it. Well, all said and done. I wasn't completely happy with the way it burned. After wards, this guy Ben(nickname: Touch) said "So, how'd it go?" I was like "eh". And he replied "Not as Cathartic as you wanted it to be huh?"
Which of course got me thinking about catharsis and expectations and all the things that can go wrong with planning art work. the first time everything was off the hip and unexpected and therefore was much more cathartic. This time, I planned and planned, thought ahead and when it didn't go right I was disappointed. SO, I guess there's some sort of inverse relationship between expectation and catharsis, multiplied by how it actually went.
Here's a link to all the pictures of the Unicorn building/burning.

Well, It went awesome. I was really happy with my set. I Dj'd the 11:30-1am and I had a pumpin' dance floor getting down to my funky beats. Let me tell you, there's nothing like having people move there feet to your music. And my skillz haven't lagged a bit, in fact think they got better. Almost all my mixes were perfect, and only one was actually horrible(it's a hard track to mix). All in all I was very happy :)
So, our party went until 4am and we went to the after party at Winkel's. There was a dj who wasn't bad but played all the classic obvious stuff. funk, soul, 80's, hip-hop. Not a bad track selector but definitely could use work on his mixes. Well, around 4am I was getting the itch and told him if he was getting tired I'd take over for him. He gave me control of the decks and I went off again. This set was even better than the first one. I know this set-up really well. The dj booth is practically made for me. It has really low ceilings and being that I am 5'6" I fit really nice into it. A lot of other Dj's have to stoop or sit to play there. I fit perfectly. I had a pretty full dance floor the whole time. it was 6am so, a lot of people go home, only the strong survived.
I finally got yelled at by someone who lived there to shut it off at 8am. I could have gone a while longer too. having a dance floor is addictive. You don't want to stop. If you even have one person who is dancing for you, you want to keep them moving. I even made a game of keeping
I got yelled at by one woman, right when I had just come on. She said "Play some techno, only girls play house" I was like, "whatever". You see House makes the girls shake their booties. and if girls are shakin' their booties, the guys will shake their booties with them and then everyone is happy. Techno is a little too masculine and doesn't make the women dance as much. So, I play HOUSE. Well, she was dancing up a storm, despite the lack of techno. At when she left she gave me a smileand a big thumbs up. Goes to show you, House Rules.
I have two gigs this week. I'm really looking forward to them. I'll post them soon.
( Labyrinth )
Hope you liked it!!
Thanks A lot
BenJammin
